
Fortaleza is the fifth largest city in Brazil. Lively, with many bars, fine hotels, good restaurants and some popular beaches, such as Praia do Futuro, where a lot of establishments have taken the place of the typical baracas. Here many people like to spend weekends among games, music, icy coconuts and “caipirinha rivers”. Then Beira Mar with skyscrapers, the harbor with the Jangadas, traditional fishing boats, and the adjoining fish market. The barrio of Praia de Iracema houses the requalified area Dragão do Mar, once docks of the port. The beautiful late '800 houses are the background to the futuristic complex with the museum of caipire traditions, the Planetarium, the Museum of Art, cinemas and clubs. Another special spot is Iracema Beach, where stands the yper famous and crowded Pirata, only open on Mondays for a truly unmissable party until madrugada (sunrise).
In the Mercado Central you can find many interesting local products, like delicious cashews (castanha), typical Hawaianas, cushy hammocks. Take a visit to the famed Teatro Alencar, a deco style building recreating the '20s atmosphere.
On the road to Fortaleza do not forget a stop at one of the many Engenho, where they handmade sugar cane to extract the rapadura, rolls of raw concentrated sugar - natural or flavored with coconut, cinnamon, papaya - good and highly energizing.
To enjoy a lot meat dishes you have to try a churrascaria, offering the Rodizio: grilled meats of all kinds on skewers served to the bitter end by attentive waiters. Until, sated, not you will turn the Stop label.
Forró is the local musical rhythm, danced everywhere on weekends, including small
funny discoteque iin every village. However the fun climax is reached in July with the Fortal, a pyrotechnic carnival out of season that attracts excites people from all over Brazil.
